As the world’s population continues to grow and the amount of farmland decreases, Zero-acreage Farming (ZFarming) may provide a creative solution to the world’s food problems. People are starting to develop ZFarms in and on buildings in urban areas like New York City, Berlin, Hong Kong, Montreal, and Tokyo. The main goal of these farms is to increase food production within cities while reducing the distance food has to travel to reach consumers. While there are advantages of ZFarming, there are also some limitations.
Most of the world’s population lives in cities and uses more than two-thirds of the world’s energy. ZFarming would make cities more sustainable by reducing their energy footprint. ZFarms connect food production and building resources, like water and electricity. They also recycle organic waste, reuse rainwater, and reduce food transportation. In addition, rooftop farms can help keep buildings cool in the summer and warm in the winter. All of these advantages decrease energy use and help the environment.
Lufa Farms in Montreal is a successful example of a ZFarm. They produce more than 40 different crops inside a huge greenhouse that sits on top of a two-story building. The farm uses the building’s irrigation system and electricity for heat during cold seasons. Lufa is also a CSA farm. Once you are a member, you can receive a weekly box of food by following these three easy steps: First, choose the vegetables you want to receive using their website. Then finalize your order before the delivery day. Finally, choose a pick-up location or pay more for delivery to your home.
Unfortunately, ZFarms have some limitations. It can cost a lot of money to improve buildings’ energy systems for indoor farming; also, most ZFarms use soil-based production even though hydroponic farming is more efficient. The crops can also be expensive in some areas. As a result, not many people can afford them. Space is another problem because it can be difficult to find a building that can accommodate a ZFarm.
Currently, architects, civil engineers, and farmers are working together to improve ZFarming so that it can help solve the world’s food shortage problems.
