♻️ Sustainable building — also called green building — is when engineers design and build a structure that does not hurt the environment. What are some things you can do to be more green?
🏟 The Olympics are held every four years in a different host country. What structures do host countries need to build to prepare for the Olympics?
💭 Think of one thing you can do to be more green. Think for 30 seconds — the teacher will call 2–3 students.

2Tap all the correct answers. Careful — how many are right?
a · look for sequence words (first, then, finally…)
b · look for imperatives (instructional)
c · ask "How did that happen?" or "How can I do that?"
d · look for flowcharts, timelines, and lists
e · read every word slowly and stop at each new word
f · skip the pictures and flowcharts — they only decorate the text

Phần 4/8 · 💡 Main idea · skim first · câu 3–6
How the Olympics Are Going Green

1When athletes compete in the 2020 Olympics in Japan, they will compete in stadiums designed and built according to sustainable engineering practices. Their medals will be made from precious metals repurposed from electronic goods like smartphones. They will use public transportation or fuel-efficient cars to travel in and around Tokyo. At night, they will sleep in athlete villages where the lumber, which was donated, will later be reused for other projects. In fact, a goal of the organizing committee is that 99 percent of all goods bought and used for the 2020 games will be reused or recycled.

2For the 2020 Olympic Games, some new buildings had to be constructed, like the new stadium. But unlike past Olympics, this time engineers had to follow a certain process when designing and planning those buildings. The first step was to read and understand the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games Sustainability Plan. This plan explained the sustainable rules, goals, and measures that had to be followed. When that step was finished, the engineers came up with a sustainable design for the stadium. In order to be sustainable, materials had to come from places where there was a lot of each material and where its removal would not be a disadvantage to that environment. Once sustainable materials were located, engineers had to think about how those materials would be brought to the building site. A long trip by train or truck causes more carbon dioxide emissions to go into the atmosphere, which is a factor in global warming. After finding the best way to deliver materials, they needed to construct buildings that used renewable energy (energy that is easy to replace) and could be used for future generations. The final step was to report back to the organizing committee on how the design and construction did not harm the environment.

3Engineers who use sustainable engineering practices know their actions can have a positive impact on the environment. The organizing committee hopes that future Olympic Games will follow the 2020 Olympics model and promote more sustainable engineering. The health of future Olympic athletes, as well as the planet, depends on it.

4Going to the 2020 Olympics? Here are some tips: Learn some Japanese — download a multilingual app so you can communicate with everyone. Once at the Olympics, talk with a robot helper, who will give you tips on where to go, what to eat, and how to get where you want to go. Buy tickets for an event at the new national stadium. Cheer on the athletes!
