Stories have the power to change our behaviors and beliefs. For centuries, both oral and written stories have influenced how people lead their lives. In recent years, television and radio shows have changed people’s behaviors in positive ways around the world.
In Vietnam, millions of rice farmers stopped using pesticides on their crops because they had listened to a popular radio series, Chuyen Que Minh or My Homeland Story. It was about a farming family who used safe farming practices instead of pesticides. This caused the rice farmers to change their ways of farming.
In South Africa, Soul Buddyz, is a favorite television series about problems—problems that young people experience. It inspired an organization to create Buddyz Clubs, which are after-school programs that teach children how to live healthy and happy lives. The clubs are a great success throughout South Africa.
In 1969, the children’s show Sesame Street appeared on television for the first time. The show was created to both entertain and educate young children. Research shows that children who grow up watching the show do better in school than those who don’t. Today, more than 100 different countries show the program.
The power of stories like these can be explained using science. When we hear, watch, or read a memorable story, we activate (make active) many parts of our brain. For example, if we are watching a hula dance, the sight and movement parts of the brain will become active even though we aren’t actually dancing. For this reason, a good story can make us feel like we are experiencing it ourselves. As a result, storytelling can be a very powerful tool. As you have read, it can even influence how we farm our crops, care for our young people, and teach our children.
