“How Digital Storytelling Can Change Lives”
Storytelling in the 21st century is not just about reading a book or listening to a story. Because of computer technology, stories have jumped off the page and onto the screen. Digital storytelling is the use of computer technology to tell stories. An online game, a video story, or a website is each an example of digital storytelling. And while the purpose of these stories is often to entertain, some groups are using digital storytelling as a way to do good in the world.
For example, in 2010 a digital storytelling experience called Conspiracy for Good told people they could do good in the world if they took part in an online game that told a story and involved a puzzle. Players followed the story by reading texts and tweets, looking at websites, and playing cellphone games. Live events also helped the players follow the story. Because the game's creators wanted to help others, they gave the players the chance to donate money to different charity groups. In the end, the players solved the puzzle and made a difference. The donated money helped build five new libraries, buy 10,000 books, and provide educational scholarships for 50 girls.
Another example is the digital story told by the nonprofit Charity: Water, which provides clean water to people. Visitors to the website will see many personal narratives — both video and written — describing the effect of receiving the gift of clean water. For instance, the site features the story of Natalia, a 15-year-old girl from Mozambique who now goes to school because she doesn't spend hours waiting for water. And visitors, it seems, have been inspired by these stories. According to the website, as of 2018, Charity: Water had funded 28,239 water projects, so many more people now have clean water — achievements supported by visitor donations.
Like traditional storytelling, digital storytelling focuses on emotionally connecting people to characters and stories. But because of technology, digital storytelling takes the art a step further, allowing organizations to reach greater numbers of players and visitors and viewers. This, in turn, raises more awareness and support in the name of good.
