Put the story in order ⏳
He avoided the Black Plague as a child, fought in a war when he was a teenager, was caught and held for ransom in his 20s, was widowed in his 40s, and was robbed in his 50s. The poet Geoffrey Chaucer had a lot of experiences to use in his writing. Luckily for us, he and his poems survived these and other problems of 14th-century England. Today, we can still enjoy reading his Canterbury Tales, one of the greatest, earliest examples of poetry in the English language.
Chaucer was born around 1340 in London, England. His family included wealthy merchants, and he was well educated. In 1366, he married Philippa Pan. They both worked for many years in the Royal Court (for people who had a connection to the King of England). During his life, Chaucer had many different jobs, including soldier, diplomat, and even gardener.
Although always busy, Chaucer could still find time to write. His first important book of poems, The Book of the Duchess, was written around 1369. During the 1370s and 1380s, he continued writing poems, including Troilus and Criseyde. Many believe this is his best work. It is The Canterbury Tales, however, that is most widely studied today.
Chaucer started writing The Canterbury Tales in 1387 and continued until his death in 1400. It is a story about storytelling. In the poem, 30 people agree to be in a storytelling contest as they travel from London to Canterbury. They come from very different backgrounds: a knight, a monk, a merchant, a wife, and so on. Each is asked to tell a story, but, in fact, The Canterbury Tales contains only 24 stories — some funny, some sad, some serious, and some rude. The story may be incomplete. Some believe that Chaucer could not finish it before he died. Regardless, Chaucer’s poetic language, his knowledge of English daily life, and his humor make this his most popular work.
