1Ling Meng needs to buy something for dinner. She heads to a BingoBox in Shanghai, China, scans a QR code on her phone to get in, and picks out some items. She checks out by scanning each item and paying with a mobile payment app, such as WeChat Pay. She does all of this herself because there are no store workers around. After she has paid, the door opens and she leaves.
2Unstaffed stores, like BingoBox, are a new option for shoppers. Since 2016, 300 BingoBox stores have opened in China, with 3,000 more scheduled to open in China and abroad. Also in the game, since 2018, is US online retailer Amazon, which offers a similar experience. With Amazon Go, shoppers download the app and swipe their phone across a scanner as they enter the store. Through mobile phone technology and hundreds of cameras, the store tracks the shopper’s items and then charges the shopper’s Amazon account.
3Because it saves money, unstaffed shopping has become popular with retailers. For example, they don’t have to pay for employees, such as cashiers. As a result, they can charge less for products—sometimes as much as 5 percent less—which is a perk that shoppers enjoy. Plus, stores are open around the clock—meaning more profit for owners and more convenience for shoppers.
4While unstaffed shopping isn’t perfect—for example, some shoppers have complained about mispriced items—the future looks bright.
